Injaz in the Classroom

Over the 2016-2017 academic year, the Citi Foundation continued its ongoing partnership with INJAZ (through a global grant with JA Worldwide) to implement a comprehensive suite of programs including Company Program and Innovation Camp. Citi volunteers worked with INJAZ’s network to provide a mixture of high-impact, one-day sessions and long-term mentorship for 9,920 students in Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Pakistan, Qatar and UAE. Additionally, the Citi Foundation sponsored the Client Focus Award at the 2016 INJAZ Al-Arab Young Entrepreneurs’ Competition in Manama, which was awarded to the Bahraini company, Roshena.

This academic year witnessed the closing of the 5th year of the Ripples of Happiness grant. INJAZ Saudi Arabia and INJAZ Palestine executed this year’s grant, which was designed to empower university age youth by teaching fundamental business and economic concepts with a special social entrepreneurship focus. This year’s program included the launch of a pilot program in public schools in Saudi Arabia, which marked the first time that Ripples of Happiness had been introduced to high school aged participants. Over the course of the one year grant, INJAZ has successfully trained and empowered more than 350 students who have contributed more than 8,775 community service hours to their local communities across Palestine and Saudi Arabia.

The Be Entrepreneurial program (supported by United Way Worldwide on behalf of Bank of New York Mellon) is a program that introduces students to the process of developing a business plan and then challenges them to start an entrepreneurial venture while still in high school. The program teaches skills including advertising, competitive advantages, financing, marketing and product development. Entrepreneurship Master Class encourages high school students to think about starting their own business while simultaneously helping them to identify the key entrepreneurial skills required. Students participate in an active simulated business game where they have the opportunity to put into action the concepts they have learned. Through this grant, INJAZ Lebanon impacted 218 students with Be Entrepreneurial and 178 students via Entrepreneurship Master Class during the course of the 2016-17 academic year.

JA More Than Money is a program supported by HSBC that teaches youth the basics of finance, including earning, spending, sharing and saving. It features six one-hour sessions each including interactive volunteer-led business and community games that are designed to help students learn the significance of money management. The program also provides take-home materials that allow students to share their new knowledge with family and friends. This year, the program was successfully implemented in 28 countries globally, with Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Lebanon, Qatar, and UAE representing MENA, impacting 9,631 youth in the region through the engagement of 99 HSBC volunteers who brought different perspectives and unique professional experiences to each and every session.

This year, INJAZ signed a new grant agreement with longtime supporter JP Morgan to support workforce readiness in Saudi Arabia and the UAE through 2018. This program seeks to prepare youth for success in the private sector, as workforce nationalization programs increase demand for highly skilled Saudi and Emirati workers. The grant’s first component will feature a curriculum update for the Steer Your Career program, originally developed in 2012 with support from JP Morgan, to reflect current educational best practices and include the most up-to-date program content. The second component will include localized add-on booklets, which will be developed for both Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and outline the nationalization initiatives in each country, the opportunities those initiatives create for young people in the private sector (including internships and pre-career trainings), and guidance to assist youth in taking advantage of these opportunities. The third and final component will include the launch of a 2017-2018 pilot of the updated program, which will impact a total of 1,250 university age students.

This academic year, MasterCard and INJAZ completed the 2016 implementation of the Women’s Entrepreneurship Program in Egypt. This intensive six-month program sought to empower competent young women from challenging backgrounds by providing them with the necessary tools to turn their business ideas into successful startups. Over the course of the year, 78 females, grouped into 20 teams, received training and professional mentorship. Of the original 20 teams, 5 teams consisting of 15 women went on to receive seed funding, incubation and advanced mentorship and training.

In the 2016-2017 academic year, MBC Al Amal sponsored two different programs throughout the region. In Saudi Arabia, MBC supported Company Program and It’s My Business through the Safeer Al-Amal initiative, serving over 1,000 Saudi youth. It's My Business emphasizes entrepreneurship with a strong focus on social studies, reading, and writing skills, while Company Program is delivered to students on the basis of the practical training methodology, allowing students to have the experience of establishing and managing their own real company. In Lebanon and Egypt, MBC Al-Amal supported the Adopt-A-School project which facilitated modernization of public school facilities in impoverished areas, and implemented INJAZ programs.

MetLife’s global partnership with JA Worldwide under the LifeChanger Grant continued in 2016-17 to support programs in Egypt, Lebanon, Qatar and UAE. This year also included support for Oman for the first time. 3,384 students were impacted with a variety of financial literacy, workforce readiness and entrepreneurship programs, including Steer Your Career, It’s My Business, Be Entrepreneurial, Personal Economics and Innovation Camps.
